Is Pope Leo Anti-Trump?

Last month, Cardinal Robert Prevost became Pope Leo, the first American chosen to lead the Catholic Church. In the days running up to his election, he openly criticized Donald Trump & JD Vance.

I recently sat down with The Sunday Times to reflect on my experience at the conclave in Rome that elected Pope Leo. We discussed my previous interactions with the former Father Bob Prevost, his remarkable backstory, and how I believe he’ll shape the Church’s engagement with the world — especially in his dealings with President Donald J. Trump.

I’m opening up comments to both paid and free subscribers. I’d love to hear your thoughts and questions, and I’ll do my best to respond over the coming days.

If you’re currently a free subscriber, I hope you’ll consider upgrading to a paid subscription. The first American pope now stands at the intersection of global faith and national identity.

Help me document what this means for the Church — and for all of us.

Letters from Leo — the American Pope & US Politics is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.

Here are some selected clips from my interview.
